Penn State won its second straight game and put together its best performance of the season in a 28-3 win over visiting Rutgers last weekend. The Scarlet Knights were facing an uphill climb as they played through coach Kyle Flood’s suspension and without key players, including No. 1 wide receiver Leonte Carroo (suspension), but the Nittany Lions still had reasons for optimism. The good vibes, of course, were highlighted by the play of freshman running back Saquon Barkley.
Penn State was a much different team against Rutgers than it was in its season-opening loss to Temple. Barkley had a big day with 195 yards and two scores, but the linebackers, cornerbacks and special teams all took their games to the next level, helped along by personnel changes. Punter Chris Gulla was an unheralded star against Rutgers, downing all five of his kicks inside the Scarlet Knights’ 20-yard line.
Bob Flounders, Andrew P. Shay and Dustin Hockensmith broke down the latest developments this week in a segment for the Keystone Kickoff Show. Check out audio of the show in this post and be sure to check back in to KeystoneSportsNetwork.com for plenty more Penn State podcasts and analysis.
