Injuries loomed large over the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 9 win over the Houston Texans. Nick Foles (collarbone) and DeMeco Ryans (Achilles), signal callers of the team’s offense and defense, both suffered ailments that could change the complexion of both units. Foles is facing a likely 6-to-8 week timetable for a return, while Ryans’ torn Achilles ends his season.
In the absence of Foles, backup Mark Sanchez saw his first action of the season. He entered in the second quarter and performed well enough to win, completing 15 of 22 passes for 202 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The veteran was prepared to play and offered hope that, in the absence of Foles, he can just as effective, perhaps even more so.
LeSean McCoy and Jeremy Maclin have both elevated their games, which can only help the Eagles offense, no matter whether Foles or Sanchez is under center. McCoy rushed for 117 yards against Houston, his second 100-yard effort in his last three games, while Maclin turned his second straight monster performance with six catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles also figure to benefit from improved health along their offensive line. Center Jason Kelce returned on Sunday, while left guard Evan Mathis could make his way back in Week 10. Meanwhile, Todd Herremans limped into the Houston game and exited early with an ankle injury. His status isn’t immediately known.
The Eagles are 6-2 and sitting atop the NFC East standings, but how much does the latest rash of injuries impact their ability to stay on the winning track? How does the offense change with Sanchez under center? Ross Tucker and Jon Ritchie joined Dustin Hockensmith on the Keystone Sports Network to break down those topics and much more.
